Whom does the evil spirit face ?

Those who are sinners and ungodly who have done nothing but wine, meat, and feminine throughout their lives, who have insulted religion and who have never done any act of virtue for religion, automatically pull themselves south after death.  Go.  Such sinners have to first cross the river full of hot iron and full, full of poetic, exploited and cruel animals.

 After crossing the river, on coming in from the south gate, they are like eyes with very wide pools, smokeless characters, roaring like doom-cloud, volcanic romp, big sharp-blown dental, with snakes like leather, leather-clad, crooked-  Bhrikuti sees Yamraj in the worst of disguise.  There is a lot of animal and Yamdoot present here.

 Yamraj always hopes for auspicious actions from us, but when no one is able to do so, then the main task of his people is to cleanse the life with terrible punishment.  Yamraj sends such souls to hell.

जो लोग पापी और अधर्मी हैं जिन्होंने जीवनभर शराब, मांस और स्त्रीगमन के अलावा कुछ नहीं किया, जिन्होंने धर्म का अपमान ‍किया और जिन्होंने कभी भी धर्म के लिए पुण्य का कोई कार्य नहीं किया वे मरने के बाद स्वत: ही दक्षिण दिशा की ओर खींच लिए जाते हैं। ऐसे पापियों को सबसे पहले तप्त लौहद्वार तथा पूय, शोणित एवं क्रूर पशुओं से पूर्ण वैतरणी नदी पार करना होती है। 

नदी पार करने के बाद दक्षिण द्वार से भीतर आने पर वे अत्यंत विस्तीर्ण सरोवरों के समान नेत्र वाले, धूम्र वर्ण, प्रलय-मेघ के समान गर्जन करने वाले, ज्वालामय रोमधारी, बड़े तीक्ष्ण प्रज्वलित दंतयुक्त, संडसी जैसे नखों वाले, चर्म वस्त्रधारी, कुटिल-भृकुटि भयंकरतम वेश में यमराज को देखते हैं। वहां घोरतर पशु तथा यमदूत उपस्थित मिलते हैं। 

यमराज हमसे सदा शुभ कर्म की आशा करते हैं लेकिन जब कोई ऐसा नहीं कर पाता है तो भयानक दंड द्वारा जीव को शुद्ध करना ही इनके लोक का मुख्य कार्य है। ऐसी आत्माओं को यमराज नरक में भेज देते हैं।
